The Crossing is non-dogmatic. That is, we aren't tied to creeds and strict belief systems. You need not check your intellect at the door and you are encouraged to wrestle with God and let your theology change and grow as you continue to experience life and God. Having said that, we also believe that it is good to have something to "hold on to" as an anchor, so to speak. So, our beliefs are not tied to certain theological dogmas that must be adhered to in order to consider oneself a member of our group, rather they are based on what we think is a more important "truth": Our experiences of God and awareness of our interconnectedness with other people should always naturally lead to social justice and becoming more humane human beings. In essence, every belief statement should be followed by a "therefore."
This is not an exhaustive list and will undoubtedly change and grow to reflect the body of gatherers. Here is what it looks like for now:
WE BELIEVE THAT ALL HUMANS ARE BEAUTIFULLY MADE IN THE IMAGE OF THEIR CREATOR, THEREFORE NOBODY SHOULD EVER BE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST FOR ANY REASON.
WE BELIEVE THAT ALL HUMANS CARRY THE DIVINE WITHIN THEM, THEREFORE WE CAN ALL HAVE EXPERIENCES OF GOD INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF SCRIPTURE.
WE BELIEVE THAT THE GOSPEL CALLS US TO PROCLAIM GOOD NEWS TO THE POOR, PROCLAIM FREEDOM FOR THE PRISONERS, RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET THE OPPRESSED FREE, AND TO PROCLAIM GOD'S FAVOR, THEREFORE SOCIAL JUSTICE IS NOT A HOBBY, BUT AT THE CORE OF WHO WE ARE.
WE BELIEVE THAT WE ARE CALLED TO "CHANGE OUR MINDS," THEREFORE WE SEEK TO BE MINDFUL AND OPEN OURSELVES TO UNLEARNING, LEARNING, AND SELF GROWTH.
WE BELIEVE THAT WE ALL HAVE A TRUE SELF THAT IS THE IMAGE OF THE DIVINE, THEREFORE WE EMBRACE VULNERABILITY AND AVOID MARGINALIZING OTHERS AS WE STRIVE TO BECOME OUR BEST AND TRUEST SELVES.
